Label removal

Coupla solutions from a winemaker's wife to get labels off bottles - fill with water and put it in the microwave until the water is pretty hot. Let it sit in the microwave for a few minutes. This softens the label from the inside. It helps thos labels that have metallic designs on them as well. We also use Goo-gone and for regular paper labels, just soak in water. Some labels can be removed using salad oil. Other labels can be removed by using oil, and then using detergent as an emulsifier to pull both oil and label off.
'Wood' Lampshade Inspired by David Trubridge

David Trubridge's Coral lampshade has been around for a while. I saw it first in Elle Canada and it's been popping up everywhere (it's in this month's Domino, where they have labeled it incorrectly as being a Arne Jacobson piece). While it barely registered at first I am now completely consumed by it... wake-up-at-four-in-the-morning-thinking-about-it style consumed. The trouble is that I don't have $500 to spend on a lampshade. So I have attempted a considerably smaller 'Inspired by' version,
I used:
- 3 rolls of Wood Effect Contact Paper
- Card
- A protractor, scissors, pencil

DIY #1: Hanging pictures

Okay! Hi everyone! Annie here! Here is my first DIY idea to share with you guys!
First of all, you take some pictures that you want to hang. You then can buy plain or decorated frames at a dollar or craft store. You can paste the pictures into the paper frames and then decorate your frames or leave them plain. Depending on what you want. You can use pom poms, markers, stickers... basically anything! Then you can take a ribbon and paste one frame onto it. Then measure out so that they are evenly spread out and then just keep pasting your frames and measuring them! Very easy and cheap! You can hang them on your wall by tape, tack, or maybe a screw! What ever you decide! Happy hanging!

Noguchi Style Table, With Books!

I spotted this Coffee Table at an open house this afternoon.
It has that Noguchi Table vibe but would cost considerably less than $1,299. I like the quirky humour that uses coffee table books as, well, coffee table books.
The staging company who did the house just stacked up books that the homeowner already had then jammed the tempered glass on top. I'm not completely convinced by the dead cow rug (I like my dead cow lightly seasoned and cooked medium well), but the rest of the house was nice.

Get The Sticky Stuff Off A Mason Jar

Sure it sounds simple, but I've just spent HOURS picking and peeling
and breaking my nails. Does anybody have a fool-proof,
no-picking-required method for getting the paper residue and sticky goo
off of jars? I know that I could just buy empty ones but I have A BUNCH
hanging around and I
need to unpeel them to use for the flower arrangements at Ted's

How To: Water Balloon Lumaries.

Here's a simple how-to for making elegant lumaries or tea-light holders from paraffin wax. Simply melt the wax in a double boiler, fill the balloons, coat the outside, pop the ballon, and light 'em up. I wonder if this would work with animal balloons...hmm.

Energy Seed generates street light from old batteries

What a smart solution to the problem of improper disposal of alkaline batteries! The "Energy Seed" concept comes from designers Sungwoo Park and Sunhee Kim. It's basically a receptacle for old batteries that collectively harnesses the leftover juice from all the batteries that are placed inside and uses it to power an LED street light.
This is a great idea for just about any environmentally-conscious neighborhood, but I'd actually like one of these for my house too! Maybe they'll design a consumer version as well.

Flat Pack, 1830's Style

Got to love the Shakers, what with the clean-lined furniture and the glossolalia. Shakerworkshops.com has some seriously lovely stuff, lots of which is reproduced from patterns used by an original family workshop. The really cool part is that you can buy an unfinished kit for considerably less than the finished piece and put it together and then stain or paint it yourself.
There are a huge variety of different stain and paint colours available
and they're included in the price of the kit. Chairs come with the required
amount of chair tape in lots of different colours (They have a virtual
tape weaver tool to help you choose). And again there are very concise tape weaving instructions on the site.

New Water Heater

My water heater sprung a leak over the weekend, right around the seal where the pressure relief valve connects to the tank. It was 12 years old and the thermostat was flaky anyway so I decided it was time to replace it. After a few calls to the hardware store, plumbers and the local gas utility, I learned that the direct vent natural gas model I have is not a common type for the local hardware stores to keep in stock and that I should give some consideration to switching to a tankless unit. One thing that I knew I wouldn't do was to switch from gas to electric--gas wins that fight hands down.
