DIY Closet Build

By NCavillones

We have that rarest of specimens in a NYC apartment--a walk-in closet. Our only other closet is a narrow affair in the bedroom. Awhile back, we built out the walk-in closet with a Rubbermaid System, in order to better utilize the space. Despite this, my husband's clothes threatened to take over the floor of the closet, mostly because we were using hanging fabric shelves for his clothes, which don't offer much in the way of support. We had the same deal in the bedroom closet, where I keep my clothes.

There had to be a better way to utilize this precious closet space and I decided shelving for the bedroom closet would save us. I measured the inside of the closet, figured out how far apart I wanted the shelves to be, and how thick each shelf should be. Off to Home Depot, where we bought a huge sheet of red oak plywood and had it cut to our specifications.

The shelves are a simple affair; three mounting strips and a shelf to lay on top. Check out my pictures on flickr, featuring my handy hubby: Closet Build on Flickr
