How to turn a concrete wasteland into a place I can hang out?

By Moila

I am a renter and I live in a back house which is totally surrounded by concrete and junk. There are 4 cars outside my door, dead plants, and crap ranging from old huge TVs to plastic buckets, to scarps of metal. it's a total mess. I'm not going to undertake cleaning my landlord's property, but I do want to reclaim some space for myself. I am throwing myself a b-day party soon and want the party to spill outside, but the great question is how to make it somewhat attractive out there. Of course big potted plants that create a barrier would be ideal but I don't have the time or money to buy/grow those. Any other ideas of how to make an attractive concrete jungle?? Any help would be appreciated!

I've got it! Try this-

Just get a circle cutter (i got mine at ostco for $20) and string up circles made from all of your junk mail. You could even get a few of your pals to help you out, make a pre birthday party party out of it!

You could buy bead curtains from the dollar store (I think?) and put those in front of the sheets too, to dress it up. either that, or dress it all up with yards and yards and yards of christmas tinsel, christmas lights, and/or artificial vines & flowers. I found a lot of those vines on sale at Walmart just after the season was over during this past year, maybe the dollar store would have something? Sorry about the mess, UGH. You might want to consider trying to keep your options open, and find a way to move. Anybody that would keep a mess like that has real problems, and renting from a person like that is going to bite any decent person in the butt someday.

This is a tough one. How about colorful sheets from Goodwill? If you could attach wire or rope to the outside of the building to some other object(s), attach the sheets from it and then weight them down at the bottoms--or use yard stakes to keep them taut--so it doesn't look like laundry, they could create an interesting barrier.
