Vintage Typewriters in Design

Can you think of anything unappealing about the design of vintage typewriters? They evoke feelings of long, arduous hours of thinking and rethinking brilliant ideas, plunking along until the last page is yanked from the rollers with satisfied uncertainty. It's old school at its best. Even if you're not a writer, you can't deny the coolness of a vintage typwriter sitting there all "I still look so good, even if you prefer a boring keyboard". Grab one or two before it's too late. Plus, it's a darned clever way to add a splash of color...

Great post! We have fabulous looking green Olivetti in its original traveling case. It's a treasured and well-used part of our household communications - grocery lists, telephone messages and reminders are added as needed. I blogged about this little typewriter at 973 Third Avenue.

I have one sitting on a side table. I went to the craft store, and bought a sheet of damask scrap book paper, and cut it to 9 x 11. I put the paper in the machine, as if I was going to type with it. Think of all the possibilities!!! You can change it out as needed, match it to couch throw pillows, replace a sheet with a nice crisp fresh one when throwing a party. Simple, cheap, and pretty darn clever. Just my style.

I'm not sure why this is such a big thing, or who started it, but you just can't help but like the look! Guess, like you said, it's the memories they evoke. I wonder if the typewriter my folks bought me way back in junior high is boxed up in the basement or if it was tossed when my siblings went through my folks home. By the time I find it we'll probably using our old computers as vintage home decor! Ha!
Eve, I must say I'm going to be spending some time checking out your photos. I love the bookcase you have with the three lamps and the sunburst clock on the wall by it. Well let's just say I'm and MCM fan and love your finds!

I sometimes use it just for fun. I slide a piece of paper in and type a quote or something funny on it.
What a terrific idea. I'm buying the next old typewriter I find! I'm hosting Christmas at my house this year. I could use it for friends and family to leave comments.

Thanks! I sometimes use it just for fun. I slide a piece of paper in and type a quote or something funny on it. The ribbon is still pretty good. I bought it for 15 bucks at the Ste-Foy flea market, in Québec City.

My fondest wish is that I still had every radio, television, camera, typewriter, and computer I ever owned---starting with my Zenith Trans-Oceanic shortwave radio (c. 1948) and my Brownie Starmite camera (c. 1962). I could have my own museum!
