Furniture: What to Look For, What to Avoid

It's no secret that I love furniture. All wood, upholstered, old, and refurbished. It's become second nature to me to avoid certain pieces that have first glance appeal but upon closer examination are cheap, lightweight, poorly constructed and badly designed. Believe me, there are plenty of those pieces popping up for sale. Over on Care2 Make a Difference I found a nice little guideline to keep in mind when considering a new piece. I can't figure out why she they have 'Upholstered Furniture' under the Avoid category, what was she thinking??

A few Do's

1. Well made, long life

2.  Wood or metal for easy repair

3.  Used or recycled furniture (always a good rule)

A few Dont's:

1.  Particle board

2.  Foam and plastic filled

3.  Pieces treated with stain resistant processes

See the rest of them over on Care2 Make a Difference

Jeff- Here's the environmental deal--

• Stain-resistance treatments containing fluorocarbons, PFOs, or formaldehyde.

Plus in all my years of upholstering, the masters have told me that it helps at first but doesn't fight off stains for very long. I think it's a money waster. <!-- /GlStoryContainer -->
