Monday Night Upholstery: Slow and Steady

Monday night Janet finished upholstering her salvaged bench. Talk about "student teaching the teacher", she paid such close attention to every detail of her rehab, it was a good reminder for me to slow down a bit to experience the experience. Ha!

A graphic artist by profession, Janet is interested in reusing as many materials as possible and keeping all new materials natural. She padded her bench in a 100% soft cotton batting and used as little spray adhesive as necessary, while researching the availability of natural spray glues.
She's taken us all on a quest to find and use natural materials in place of synthetics when restyling our pieces.
The underneath fabric had a very 50's metallic thread running through it. I liked the fabric but it nearly disintegrated when she removed it.

Monday at 9:30 p.m. we found ourselves having completed the 7th session of a 5 week class. We were having so much fun working, sewing, stapling, talking and laughing, we lost track of the weeks. Yikes!
So our meticulous artist learned how to use an upholstery machine, make covered welt cord, construct a boxed and corded cushion, handstitch it closed, make and attach covered buttons and rehab a nifty fifties bench with mostly natural materials. It's been inspiring to watch her work. I can't wait to see what's up next.
