The Virgin Gardener: Scouting Location

By ModHomeEcTeacher

I'm coming clean. I've never planted or tended to a vegetable garden before.  As I wrote in the Trendspotting: Victory Garden post, Mr. Mod is the farmboy and ultimate gardener.  Perception is reality, right?  Well, I did go out yesterday and spot the location for my lil' plot of goodness. Right here next to the buffer wall between the neighbors and my shade garden. If he tries to horn in on my veggie garden construction, I'll have to go do some serious pruning of his beloved fruit trees.

Stacey,

It was your post that got me going. We have a greenhouse (basic, no heat or mist anymore) and I need to go get seeds and get started. I would love it if you did it too, so I can ask questions.

Yay! I'm glad to hear you're undertaking the project. Due to my work and school schedule topped with our wedding and honeymoon last spring I never got around to planting my garden but I'm ready to roll again this year. Two years ago I planted a salsa garden with a variety of tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, green onions, cilantro, etc. With the raised beds you'll find that there is little to no weeding necessary which is fantastic. Helpful hint: keep the beds small enough to access the center from all sides so you don't have to step into the bed to get to the veggies in the center. That way you'll keep your feet clean when harvesting. I'll have to post photos when I start my seedlings and tilling up my plot for planting. Best of luck!

Good for you!  I have been considering doing the same, but I broke my ankle 2 weeks ago and I don't think it's going to happen this year.  Although, I found a site on the weekend on growing tomatoes in containers:  http://www.viddler.com/explore/gardeningm/videos/3/.  I have never had a vegetable garden before either.  I look forward to hearing all about your success.
