Ten Picture Arranging Guidelines

Lately I've noticed more than a few picture arrangements being hung curiously high on the wall. I'm not sure if this is due to a bona fide trend, or if individuals (close friends and relatives of mine) aren't aware that there are, in fact, some general rules to follow that bring cohesiveness and balance to an arrangement. Of course, if the high hung art is your intention, then by all means Hang 'Em High.

If, on the other hand, you are innocently unaware of the very simple design rules about hanging pictures, check out this short list of ten rules compiled by interior designer Christine Craig that will gently help you kick your sky high hanging habits.

That is exactly our problem. My husband is 6'5 and I'm 5'5. I've noticed this at lots of houses where I've been lately. The pictures are hung by the taller person and it just doesn't work for me.

Thanks for your rule of thumb. All help is welcome.

Good tips, but I found some of the comments on picture height interesting.  I used the rule 60-66" to the middle of the picture if your standing or 42-48" to the middle if you're seated.  Hubby and I used to argue over picture height because his "eye level" is much higher than mine ... 6'2 vs. 5'3!  I found the above general rule and "peace" in our home when hanging artwork now.  I used to tease my sister that she would stand on a stool and hang her pictures at eye level.
