Hard rock maple bedroom set

By Lara15

Hello creative world: QUESTION. (Think Dwight from The Office..ha)

I've begun sanding and re-painting my bedroom set (vanity/bed frame/dresser) which is hard rock maple. Apparently this type of wood is extremely time-consuming to refinish, so I opted for sanding it and painting it a very deep chocolate brown color. I've finished the vanity, and the paint covered fine in two coats, but I'm concerned about wear and tear in the future. Also, the finish is more matte than I anticipated. What type of sealant or finish could I spray or paint over to protect it?

In cases like this try to find a piece of glass to cover the top.

If you really want to have a shiny finish, have a pro look at it, personally. AMAT12 is right about latex. Many "protective" finishes will dissolve the paint and damage your job. A pro can tell you face to face what you can and can't do with a specific stain or paint or wood. (example: You cannot lacquer mahogany or rosewood. The wood's natural oils can bleed through the finish).

It's great for cheap furniture where you want to change the look, but not for something where you really invest a great deal of time restoring the piece. I learned my latex lesson with "good piece" of furniture the hard way.

Sorry, but latex paint is made for ease of use -- not durability. Many of the protective fishishes available will actually mess up the paint.

I also painted my furniture recently over some cheap furniture with latex paint. I am also afraid that water from a glass might destroy the paint. What would you Curbly folks recommend to seal latex paint with?

Painting? What type of paint -- petroleum (oil) based, latex, or what?  Please tell me you did not use a latex based paint on fine furniture.

After I know this I can offer some advice.
