My House

By Keter

I thought I would start to share some pictures of my weird place.  I love the proportions and the solidity of the structure; the surfaces and some of the strange accoutrements, however, need some serious updates.  When I was demoing some decrepit shelves that were hung from the ceiling in the master bedroom, I was hit on the head by something that fell off the very top...when I had a chance to look, it turned out to be a genuine vintage hippy hash pipe! (I gave it to a friend who would appreciate it.)  Whenever I encounter another weirdness, at least I know what inspired it! ;o)

This was one of the weirdnessess that I removed:  both upstairs and downstairs featured this bizarre air duct.  (I tried painting it to make it blend in and realized how futile that would be rather quickly.)  Not only did it make it feel like a snake was hanging overhead, it didn't even work!  Very little air came out of it and my air conditioning bills were astronomical.

Also visible in this picture are the U channel beams that form the structure, just like in a parking garage. Each beam makes a little window where it sits on the walls (cinderblock). You can also barely see the new wall sheathing I put in...a standard 2x4 wall stuffed with R35 insulation, radiant barrier, and two new electric circuits (the old single circuit had failed entirely - buried inside the concrete wall where it could not be reached) and clad with some very unusual birch paneling I found.

You get a little better view of the almost completed wall in the photo below.  In this photo, you also see the exposed aggregate floor.  This section looks pretty good, unfortunately that is not true for many other areas.

Well, that's enough strangeness for one evening.  ;o)

I love the paneling.  When we were putting new ductwork in our basement about ?? years ago, we found a bag of pot and a VHS Porn movie.  There was a teenage boy who lived here with his mom and step-dad and, from what I hear, he was beyond wierd.  In the year 2525 someone may find our time capsule we stashed into a nook between cinder block foundation that a very 70's planter was built on.  We took the sledgehammer to it and felt the first wave of zen relaxation in the house we call HOME!

Heh, that does look like a snake overhead! We lived in a house in southern Indiana once that had that same thing going on. It always freaked me out!
