Fighting Fat with Kids ...

By Ken Hoyt

Cultural abundance has its drawbacks. Too much food can mean too much tummy. And for many the war is ongoing through life.

The one of the latest health concerns is over obesity in children. The worry is real. Once an eating pattern is developed it is very difficult to change. I was an obese kid and I've fought with weight my entire life (with wildly varying results). It's a war I'd spare any child if I could.

Recently, and sadly, research has shown that fat cells never go away (without surgery). And there seems to be some evidence that fat cells, adipocytes, have a mind of their own. Still other studies of twins have uncovered convincing evidence linking genetics to weight issues.

The good news? Getting better sleep can help children with weight control. So can exercise, diet and other lifestyle changes. Even Indiana Jones is getting a spanking for promoting junk food.

The problems that evolve from weight issues worsen with age. It's never too early (or too late) to start a little program that can spare anyone health difficulties in the future. Calculating your Body Mass Index is a great place to start. And know, that as sure as celery sticks are my constant companion, you're not alone.
