DIY: May Day Seed Pocket

By Ken Hoyt

If your springtime has resembled mine you have little in your garden that might make a bouquet. Perhaps a fistful of soggy dandelions? Beyond that I got nothin'.

I like celebrating May Day because it gives me an excuse to surprise someone. This year's dearth of flowers has forced me to re-think my strategy. My new rationale is that we need hope more than we need flowers. And what's more hopeful than a packet of seeds. They promise a bounty of blooms.

This little pocket is just right for hanging a greeting on the doors of your friends' and neighbors' homes.

May Day Seed Pocket

You'll need:

  • 1 sheet of 12" x 12" scrapbooking paper (makes 3 pockets)
  • 1 sheet of 8 1/2" x 11" printable paper
  • Glue stick
  • Hole punch
  • Scissors or paper cutter
  • Ribbon or raffia
  • A packet of seeds for each gift

Instructions:

Cut three strips from the scrapbook paper, 12" long by 4" wide. Face the design-side of the paper away from you. Fold the paper 4" up from the bottom and 4" down from the top, and crease well. The flap that's on the outside is the pocket. Punch two holes on each side measuring 1" and 2 1/2" from the bottom (1/4" in from the edge). Punch two holes at the top edge, 1 1/2" in from each side and 3/8" down from the edge.

To fasten the sides:
Thread two strands of raffia, 8" long though each hole and knot (trim the excess raffia). Repeat for the other side.
To make the hanger:
Thread three strands of raffia, 18" long, through the holes. Measure 3" in from the end of the raffia and tie the strands together in a knot.

You can print your May Day greeting on the computer if you wish. When laying out the type keep in mind that the finished card should measure roughly 2 1/2" tall by 2 3/4" wide. You may wish to leave a small area on the bottom for handwritten note. Apply glue to the back of the card and center it on the bottom pocket. Press firmly.
