Mouldings can be an effective tool for pulling attention to a pleasing detail. That detail might be the view outside a window, a handsome floor or a doorway. For the past decade, or so, the tendency has been to use traditional silhouettes with a fresh coat of white paint... It's a classic effect, if not especially innovative.

The ornate mouldings that are currently in favor aren't a great marriage for the contemporary home. Using sleeker lines can open up the possibility of employing a more graphic color treatment. Too many choices? Tim McKeough, in the New York Times, surveys some of modern architecture's more influential voices for some strong ideas.
