Free Stuff: Books!

By Ken Hoyt

HarperCollins has made checking out their latest books a lot easier. You can browse the entire contents (cover to cover) of a select cross section of their offerings on your computer.

They liken this offering, called Browse Inside, to giving the customer a chance to peruse a book much as they would in a bookstore. And they are guessing that you'll purchase the book if you find something you like.

I think it's a great idea, and I'm likely to succumb to that form of seduction.

Does giving away something you generally sell seem counter-intuitive? I doubt that it will hurt their business. I find it hard to read anything larger than an article on line. For me there's a certain coziness about books (I just can't curl up with the laptop).

This is ideal for online shoppers (like me). And it may be a boon to the few and hardy that can read an entire novel sitting at the computer.
