House Tunes: DIY Your Own Party Soundtrack

By Ken Hoyt

Ever notice that the best parties and clubs have the greatest music? Whenever I put together a party I like to create a soundtrack. On bigger events I’ll hire a DJ to build an entire evening… starting with hot and flirty music for cocktail hour… moving on to environment sweetening* tracks for dinner. I like to finish the evening with music that is quiet and sleepy (cue the parking valets).

Sounding like you’re cutting edge is important for image-oriented businesses and I have a favorite DJ that always knows the next hot group or sound. He’s adept at riding his sonic surfboard and finding music that is smart, but not too familiar. I can’t tell you his name… it’s a trade secret.

However, I will share this… An event-planner/friend turned me on to this guy, DJ Earworm, who is doing some of the sexiest mashups around. If you want to be the hottest host this season download (for free) some of the lounge-y mashups he created for a Cartier party in San Francisco, especially L’eau de Rose. I can’t wait to book him for a party!

*My term for music that fills in social gaps without impeding conversation.
