Creative Room Dividers

By Kathryne Lynn

I have a dilema, I have a large "bonus" room which is actually a bedroom for my two girls who happen to be 8 years apart in age (4 and 12).  What this means is that there has been a ton of fighting over decor.  The four year old loves pink and Sponge Bob Square Pants, my 12 year old loves black and red classic lines with a oriental motif.  A solution would be a divider so there would be two seperate rooms.  BUT, first of all I rent, which means it can not be permanent nor can it damage the walls, ceiling or floor.  Second of all it has a ceiling fan in the middle of the room, so the divider can not go to the ceiling. I found alot of room dividers like the one below that I found at www.homedecorators.com which I love, but it is not practicle for a 4 year old.  Does anyone have any ideas of a practicle yet classy room divider that would be kid and rental friendly?

I'd also recommend wall decals for decorations. Blik offers great solutions for those who rent and can't paint the walls (www.whatisblik.com). Most are entirely removable, and some are even re-stickable, so your younger girl can switch the decor to suit her mood. Who says renters can't have fun?

I second designphoto's suggestion, and would recommend Ivar by IKEA as a good product. It is highly flexible in terms of need and adaptation to future use, sturdy (real wood, not MDF), comes in a variety of heights and widths, and is a breeze to set up/take apart. You could even put two units back to back and put fabric or canvas between them to allow light in but to guarantee additional privacy for the girls.

Book cases that are open on both sides would probably be the best solution.  A grid would be nice and you could tack up a "back" (out of almost anything) on every other box.  Each child gets to use every other cube for storage and would still have visual privacy.

Good luck, Lynne at design by photo
