Cork or Bamboo

By Katherine

OK, I can't bring myself to put regular carpet throughtout in the house I will soon be selling (I can put some, for cost purposes).  I feel that carpet is an environemntal issues (production and waste), that it never is truly clean once you live on it (allergies, etc).  What has been the experience with bamboo or cork?  Are they durable, at least as durable as wood?  Are they of general appeal to prospective buyers?  Do I have to be careful which brand I buy, does the production differ in terms of environmental effects?

hi, i know this is really late to reply but I have cork flooring in my house. We are anti-carpet anyway. We don't want it in our house. The cork was here when we moved in. Cork is pretty popular right now but in my mind the cork just does not hold the value that wood does. I plan on replacing the cork with plywood. The cork is ok, I like it, it's neutral and soft and easy to clean, but for prospective buyers I would recommend baboo over cork.

I agree, put some carpet in.  You will not get the cost of the wood, cork, or bamboo floor back out of the house, and they are expensive to put in.  Let the new owner enjoy a new carpet, and a lower price for the home, and you won't loose on the sale.  Good Luck in selling  your house.

I have friends who have both cork and bamboo; both are wonderful environmentally and in terms of durability. Cork is soft underfoot, easy to keep clean, and great at masking sounds. Bamboo costs about the same as putting in a hardwood floor and requires the same upkeep, but would probably appeal to more people from an aesthetic standpoint. Both can look spectacular, but I can imagine some people wouldn't find cork as visually pleasing as bamboo. Good luck selling your house!

So expensive!  All of these options, especially for a sale where the next owner might not appreciate and rip it all up.  Go with a low VOC carpet.  They're out there.  And not so expensive.

hi katherine, both bamboo and cork are excellent "GREEN" (environmentally friendly) options, and they are definitely as durable as wood. a cork floor will have a lot more cushion than both wood and bamboo flooring. but a bamboo floor will have a spectacular modern look. and for the carpet you may put in, there are lots of environmentally friendly carpet manufacturers.you can do a google search and i'm sure a bunch will come up. FLOR is definitely one of them.
