Home Office redo, on the cheap

By HillaryJohnson

My boyfriend's home office, in a corner of our bedroom, has long been an eyesore. Cobbled together out of pieces of metro shelving (odd-lengthed poles protruding every which way), sheets of formica, and mis-matched plastic drawers of all kinds, and strung with party lights, it always looked to me like a pike of wrecked bicycles. So while he was in Vegas for a bachelor party this weekend, I took the whole thing apart and re-did it.

The only thing I bought for the "new" office is the dark wood desktop, which I picked up from the Ikea "as is" bin for $49. I re-configured the metro shelving to provide more storage, and be more neatly configured. I edited out everything that didn't go with the black and chrome theme. I bundled power cords with zip ties, and got rid of a sticker-covered file cabinet and added the three black wire file boxes on the shelf (they were in the attic). The coup de grace was hanging his beloved Patrick Nagel posters, which somehow work with the whole black and chrome 80s nostalgia.  The lesson? It's amazing what you can do if you just pick a color palette and edit, neaten and arrange things, and provide good task lighting.

Very well done Hillary!  I too can tell he approved.  The art really makes for a great finishing touch too.

I working on my office redo.  Having a color theme can really make a difference in how a busy work area looks.  Thank heaven for Krylon Fusion. I'll be painting my plastic drawer containers all black to work together.  You're pix are an inspiration for me to hurry and get it done.
