My name is Leslie, and in between work, school, the grandkids, and moments (ok, hours... OK, days!) of serious sloth, my partner Von and I are working on "retrovating" our old house. We call it Retrovating because the previous owners ripped out most of its original character in order to make it into a strictly functional boarding house for college students with maximum bedrooms for maximum income, and our focus is on putting back as much of the "feel" of a house this age and style as we can.

Here's my house blog: http://georgetownhouse.livejournal.com. If you're on LJ, please friend me there, but it's open to anyone to read and comment!

I joined curbly because although we're reasonably competent do-it-yourselfers when it comes to the functional aspects of fixing up and maintaining an old house, we need a lot of help on the design end of things, and this seemed to be a great place for that.

BTW, this picture is one of my favorites of my old-man Max, a 15+ year old pit/whippet mix who was being used as fight bait when I first rescued him off the streets in Philadelphia. He's a classic example of a fearful, aggressive, "there's no hope for him" dog who, with love and patience, turned into the biggest gentlest happiest lovebug out there. And he's a sunbathing fiend!!

Designing and organizing around big dog crates

By Georgetownhouse

These dog crates are the bane of my existance. Surely I can't be the only one who has a room that I'd like to look decent, but there's this big whonkin' crate (or in my case, two big crates) that just kills the space: You can't really put anything on top of them in an organized fashion, though ours of course become dumping grounds for stuff. You can't really use the wall space behind them for anything other than decorative stuff since the crates » READ MORE

Rail-based storage systems?

By Georgetownhouse

I'm trying to resolve some issues with both storage and general decor in our big mess of an office/dog room/exercise room. One idea we came up with last night was to surround the room with a rail to which you can attach storage baskets, shelves, things like that. It ties into both storage and decor because it evolved from a discussion about how we both like the look of a chair rail (even if not positioned at "standard" chair rail height) with one » READ MORE

Your dog looks very sweet. A great rescue.

I'd love to see more pics of your retrovations. I think it's a crime to trash an old house's character just to make more money off it. I've seen it happen in my native San Francisco. But I have also seen people take beauiful houses gone to neglect and restore them brilliantly. In that City they make money either way, so it works I guess.

Good luck.

Hey, thanks for your comment and pictures. Sorry about the mix up with the comment form, we'll work on improving that. I posted a pic from your blog, and also a reminder that my post in itself is not a contest, more of a call for inspiration. Sorry again for the confusion!
