Mail Organization

By ErickaJo

Hey there :)

You know those by-the-door mail files?  They've got several pockets and they hang on the wall so you can toss your mail in them when you get in?

Well, those things have gotten ugly as of late.

I have three adults in my house, so I'm looking for something with three pockets, or 4, for outgoing mail.  Material isn't really important, there's nothing that I'm afraid to work with (although, even though I can't sew, I'm drawn to canvas-like fabrics).  Key danglies and all that, nice but not important.

Any ideas would be met with gratitude and applause.  I was looking for one to buy, but I'm pretty comfortable with making one.

Thank you!

I do believe the shutters idea is perfect.  It's arty, and it won't collect junk (which is one of my biggest fears).  I'll have to keep an eye out for one now :)  I'll post pictures when it's done!  Thank you!

Oh, and I just got to thinking, if you want something out of the ordinary...how about using an old louvered door (or shutter)?  You'd have to measure the area with the louvers and cut a thin piece of plywood to fit and secure to the back so the mail wouldn't fall through.  Then just add hooks to hang on the wall.  You could paint a number of slats for each person so they'd know where to get their own mail.  They come in various sizes and you often can find used ones if you like the old peeling paint look.

The only draw back is other than adding hooks for keys you couldn't use it for other items like you could a basket.

Or a little more decorative and you sew or know someone that does this idea could be adapted to your decor.

Would something like this do?  It goes over the door, but it's a bit cuter than the typical wall mail organizers that are available.

 Over the door wicker baskets.

That's weird, it ate my last comment.  Pah.

I live in a townhouse, and through the front door the kitchen is to the left, the 1/2 bath and stairs are to the right.  Straight ahead is the dining room and living room.  There is wall space between the bathroom and the stairs, maybe about a foot.

Thank you!  Sorry it took so long :D

No, you're not being difficult.  I wouldn't have asked if I didn't want to help.  I love this kind of challenge.

You mentioned front door so I'm guessing either you have an entry room/hall or it comes straight into your living area and not a more private entry into a kitchen.  Am I right in assuming that?

Hanging would be optimal.  I try to keep all surface area away from my front door as it just becomes a clutter collector.  Or a cat launching pad.  So at this stage in the game I think a wall organizer is the way to go for me :)  I hope I'm not being difficult.  Thank you for your time!

Does it have to hang on the wall?  There are so many ways one can organize mail other than the traditional wall organizer.  If not, could you show me a picture of the area you're wanting the mail organized?  That way I or other's could easily help you with an idea that's not so "ugly".
