No-Screw Window Treatments
By DesigningMomYes, you read that right.
The managment of our daughter's new apartment don't allow screws in the walls and most curtain rods worth their weight have screws. So we had to come up with other ideas.
She found a sheer cheetah print scarf she really wanted hung over the sliders in the living room. So again mom to the rescue. Found the scarf at Big Lots for only $9.99 so headed next door to K-Mart to see what they had to offer in 3Ms Command Hooks. We found good sized hooks in both white and chrome. The white was less expensive and would blend in with the white walls so we chose two hoping we wouldn't have to come back for the third one. We didn't. Below is a picture of it in her living room. You don't notice them as much in real life.

Next onto the kitchen. While at Big Lots I'd seen a table runner in turquois, but Katie wanted placemats and was afraid it was too bright with the silk chair's blue since the dining area is open to the living room. So we didn't get it. When we got to thinking about a WT for the kitchen I again thought of that runner. So we headed back to BLs and pick it up along with some nails and a hammer. Once we got home I climbed on the counter having Katie hand me the supplies along with the runner and be my guide to getting the runnr hung evenly. This is how it turned out. Just two nails a table runner and we had a valance for the window over the kitchen sink.

Hope this helps those of you that live in apartments and have to be careful not to damage your walls. Now all 3M needs to come out with is curtain rods for those windows you want to hang panels on for privacy. Maybe I should send them an email?

Thanks BPH. That's what we were hoping to use in her bedroom. With one window 59 inches wide I wasn't sure we could find a tension rod to fit and didn't want to use one made for a shower. Too bulky.
I did recently find one for up to an 84 inch wide window. We kept forgetting to look when we were together. Hadn't found curtains either so it was no big deal. Now that I know they make them I'll make her some window treatments before I visit next time. I think we've decided on tie up or roman shades.
Nice to know that the tension rods work well from someone that's used them though. Thanks again for your reply. Luckily she has mini blinds up there for privacy until I get there.

I use tension rods for curtain panels in my apartment. I could probably screw in rods, but I like the tension rods because they're so easy to handle and remove if I need to clean or replace curtains. They're maybe $5-20 depending on style/finish at Target.

Thanks Affinity. I've become a big fan of 3M Command products. We use them whenever we can. I kept 3M in mind when designing the art work for her apartment. Everything I make will be hung with Command strips which are similar to velcro with their removable sticky stuff on them. They not only save your walls from holes, but are so easy to readjust the art if you don't get it quite straight the first time. Love em!
