How to Green Your Diet
By DIY Maven
Today is Earth Day, so here's a shout out to the big blue ball we call home! Woo-hoo! To show our thanks for all that it's done for us over the years, here are some 'green' diet tips. Why green our diets? Because what we eat may very well be a leading cause of global warming.
- Skip the meat and go faux*. It takes 16 pounds of grain to produce 1 pound of meat. And, yes, cows do produce emissions as well.
- Eat green-colored stuff. They're earth-friendlier than animal products. It's always best to buy fresh and local too. Doing so saves on transportation (energy costs) and you support local growers.
- Grow your own. A small garden, a windowsill (for herbs) or a patio pot of tomatoes, growing your own food means no packaging and no transportation emissions.
- Make your own. Pre-packaged basics, like vegetable stock, are great, but their pre-packaged!
- BYOB. This one we all know, but it bears repeating: Use reusable shopping bags.
