Could carpeting actually be GOOD for the environment?

By DIY Maven

Recently, a study* determined that carpeting one room would save each of 26 million households in the UK £60 per year in heating costs. The sum savings for the entire country would amount to no less than £156K. The study sites that carpet is a very effective insulator and is ten times greater than hard flooring.

*The study is a product of Fun on the Floor, which seems to be in the business of promoting carpeting. Of course, that doesn’t necessarily negate the study’s findings.

How many of us have changed over the years to hard surfaces?  I know that we have just from a cleaning point of view.  As much as a basement seems warmer with carpet, I don't like how it shows wear and tear quickly ... especially if you have doors to the outside.  Having said this, I love my area rugs!
