The Floating Cabin

By DIY Maven

Ever dream of a cabin on a lake? How about a cabin IN a lake?? Margy and Wayne Lutz's get-away in Powell Lake in British Columbia is just that. The 20' x 21' 2-story cabin sits atop a 40' x 40' float but has a couple of other floats tethered to it that house a woodshed and Margy's vegetable garden. Yes, the Lutz's pay property tax as well as a water lease. Both add up to about $1000 a year. There's no bathroom in the cabin, so the couple have to make do with an outhouse on shore. Via.

Hello All - I just found these pictures of my float cabin here on the blog.  My cabin is on Powell Lake in British Columbia.  I live here about 75% of the year.  It would be full-time, but I have some town chores that take me back down the lake.  It is water access only and off the grid.  It was built by a friend from the float up and he has helped us learn about being more self reliant.  Both my husband and I were cityfolk until we fell in love with this lifestyle.  You can read more at my blog http://PowellRiverBooks.blogspot.com.  There are also two feature articles over on www.tinyhouseblog.com.  I invite you to come and see. -- Margy

Thanks, The entire area is a beautiful place to visit. The boathouse is located close to the lighthouse at Pointe Au Baril (about 4 hours north of Toronto).  http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Pointe+Au+Baril

It's a remote area dotted by small Islands, inhabited one or two cottages (cabins), bear, moose and lots of fish. One of the great things about going up here is the lack of communication with the "outside world" Doug's place has no TV, poor radio reception, and until the last few years no phone (thanks Rogers for better cell coverage). If you ever have an opportunity to visit this area I highly reccomend it.

Bill--Your brother's boathouse is absolutely gorgeous. The view from inside looking down the channel...stunning. Simply stunning.

This is my Brother's family's boathouse, incredibly cool and full of DIY ideas! I feel lucky to get to spend time here in the summer.
