Curbly in a Book Store Near You!
By DIY Maven
About six months after Curbly went public, a writer/editor in China contacted me through comments on a post I had written. The post was a ‘how-to’ in which I ‘sanded’ a light bulb. The writer/editor, Affa, asked if I would I like to be included in a new book they were putting together. ‘Of course!’ was my reply. Yesterday, after nearly a year since our first correspondence, the book arrived! As for my contribution, the pages are pictured below. (Okay, so most of the print is in Mandarin, and okay, this book might not be available in a bookstore near you, but still!)

Published by China Light Industry Press, the book, entitled I Love Handicraft: 56 Craft Creators’ Interview and DIY Tips, includes crafters from all over the world, including but not limited to Brazil, Taiwan, Canada, Ireland and the U.S. There’s a particularly charming passage on the back cover of the book, printed both in Mandarin and English, that reminds us how creativity transcends our differences.
“The inspirations are right beside you,
from a buckle to a lollipop.
Slowing down and using your imagination,
you will find your hands are
not only able to strike on the keyboard
but also create some interesting things,
and make your life delightful.”

Maven-why don't we think about it?! We could muddle through the format, the DIY, streamlined techniques like we talked about. I don't see why we couldn't kick arse.

Way to go, Maven! I'd love to see a book with your name on the cover!

Thanks Ruajennie!
MHET--take it from someone who has gotten her fair share of rejections from agents and fiction book publishers--when another published writer offers to 'hook you up' you do NOT let the opportunity pass by!! You pursue it to the end....period...no matter how daunting it might seem at first. If I sound like I'm scolding you...I AM! ;)

I emailed a woman who wrote DIY Design It Yourself, Ellen Lupton. It was all about doing your own graphics and stationery and some random projects she did with the student from her Dept. She told me to email her a few chapters and she would review them and hook me up with some NY publisher who does these sort of books. It sounded so daunting I let it go. Something to consider. (We could do a world tour. ha!)
