The 12 Rules of Re-Gifting

By DIY Maven

You’re not exactly enthused with that potpourri Aunt Polly gave you for Christmas, or that bottle of champagne from your friend Brian, which makes you nauseous just looking at it. So what do you do with these gifts that you don’t need or can’t use? Polly's potpourri and Brian’s bubbly could be re-gifted, if you follow MB Dunleavey’s rules for re-gifting.

  • Don’t tell the recipient their gift has been re-gifted.
  • Re-wrap the re-gift.
  • Hand-me-downs should not be re-gifted.
  • Keep track of who your re-gifted item came from originally.
  • CLEAN your re-gifted items, if needed.
  • Don’t re-gift half-used gift cards.
  • Consider using re-gifts as joke gifts.
  • Don’t re-gift stuff you’ve owned for a while.
  • Booze, including champagne, can be great re-gifts.
  • Don’t re-gift items from out-of-business companies.
  • Consider selling your unwanted gifts online.
  • And finally, there are things, according to MB that you should never re-gift because they’re re-gifted giveaways. They include: "candles, soap, random books, mysterious CDs, obscure software, cheesy jewelry, scarves, fruitcake, pens, cologne, boxed sets of extinct bath products, videos or DVDs obviously acquired on a street corner, socks and any appliances or electronic gear the giftee would be puzzled to receive."

I agree. I've re-gifted bottles of wine when appropriate, like as a hostess or house warming gift. And as for the 'no pens rule' I say 'boo'. I love pens.

I don't think it's tacky to re-gift. Especially if you think someone else may enjoy the re-gifted gift
more than you ever would or if you're working with an extremely tight budget. Thanks for sharing DIY Maven!
