Phone Home Security
By DIY MavenYour neighbors have noticed that your interior lights have been going on precisely at 6 pm and off at 11 pm every night. Either you have developed a new kind of obsessive compulsive disorder involving illumination, or your cat has determined the sorcery of The Clapper. A third scenario is that you’re out of town and you’ve rigged up a lamp with a timer to make your home appear occupied.
Who Are You Fooling?
Nobody. Even the stupidest burglar should be able to figure out your high tech security system just by staking out the joint for a night or two. (Sounds like someone has been reading too much Raymond Chandler.)

For an alternative to the predicable timer, take a cue from your favorite spaceman and simply phone home. Light on Demand is a clever contraption that works as a conduit between lamp and telephone. You simply phone home from wherever you are in the world and Light on Demand activates the lamp on the first ring for a preprogrammed length of 3 to 300 minutes. The call to activate the device is free of charge, even if you’re calling internationally.

See the Ring
The manufacturers of the device also highlight its benefits for the hearing impaired who may not be able to hear a ringing phone over a blasting television, or the advantage of turning off your telephone’s ringer during someone’s nap time. Not to mention never having to enter a dark home again.
Cheaper than a Rottweiler
The high tech, low cost Light on Demand is available through the manufacturer’s website for a $29.99, shipping included. And you don’t have to pick up its poop.

Wow, cool post! Now here's what I've always wanted (does it exist?): A contraption to unlock (and lock) my front door using my cell phone. I mean, we have beepers for car doors, why not have them for our houses?
Is this a DIY-able idea?
