TOTALLY DIY-able Felt Wine Rack!

This six pack wine rack from Elsewares is unbelievably clever. Not just because it’s made of renewable and recyclable materials, but because of how it’s constructed. Made of four pieces of 17" x 5" wool felt, it’s totally DIY-able!! To make it, I’d first sew the center two pieces of heavy fabric together in three equidistant rows and then sew the outer two pieces of fabric to the center two pieces in four equidistant rows. To keep the rack’s shape, I’d probably replace the slots with empties until the next trip to the liquor store. The original would set you back 40 bucks, but I’d be willing to bet many of us have scrap fabric in a bin somewhere–which means it would cost us only our time! GREAT for holiday gift-giving too.

Hey Ryan! I totally understand where you're coming from!! I love finding great designs like this one that look DIY-able, because we here at Curbly--even if we can afford to buy such things--LOVE the challenge of making it ourselves. So, we try, and if we fail, THEN we buy the original! LOVE your website BTW. I have a feeling I will be scouting it out for other such fabulous items. I hope you don't mind! ;)

I run elsewares.com, so I'm clearly biased, but to make these nearly as well as ETCETERA MEDIA (who make them by hand in the USA, by the way) is no easy trick.

Plus, it feels nice to support independent designers ;)

Without having made one, just looking at it, I suspect that you would not be able to make it like that as the fabric would be too stiff. I think you would have to start from one edge - stitch two pieces of fabric on the short end, then do the same with the other two pices. then (1)put one double layer on top of the other and sew together the middle two pieces at a distance of half the circumference of a bottle plus a bit of ease. Then (2) stitch the two original pairs (ie top two and bottom two) together another half circumference along. Repeat processes (1) and (2) across till you have the four bottle spaces, then stitch the ends same as the first seam.  Phew! hope that makes sense.
