How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets

By DIY Maven

Take a look at Amy’s cabinets. She’s posted the entire process over on day-lab diy. Sure, it was a lot of work, but if you follow her steps, you could get the same fantastic results. This is the Cliffs Notes version of what she did:

  1. She removed all the doors from the cabinets.
  2. Then Amy removed all the hardware.
  3. She sanded the glossy finish off the cabinets and doors with 220 grit sandpaper.
  4. Next she cleaned all the parts with tack cloth. (Note, you can have just as good results using a soft damp cloth.)
  5. Then she primed with Kilz latex primer.
  6. After the primer, Amy applied 3 coats of green and white paint where appropriate for the design.
  7. When the final coat of paint was completely dry, she applied 3 clear protective coats of Polycrylic. (I would suggest sanding the individual pieces with 220 grit between coats of poly for a super smooth finish.)

That must have been an inhuman amount of labor ... but what a great result!
