Is this Ristorante Candlestick DIY-able?

By DIY Maven

Check out this candlestick designed by Harry Allen. It’s available through Velocity Art and Design for 70 bucks. The plastic resin candlestick is billed as a ‘thoroughly modern cast of an old time Chianti bottle.’ I don’t get it...why not just buy a bottle of Chianti–in the appropriate basket–drink the wine and then shoot some white paint at it? You’d probably want to add a candle ring to prevent wax from dripping on your paint job. Or is getting a durable–and opaque–paint finish on glass a fruitless endeavor? (I’ve only used translucent glass paint.)

Hi,

The question is, how bad you want this “Ristorante Candlestick

I would not spray-paint it. It will scratch easy. I would use regular paint as Manzabar suggested but would either dip the bottle (assuming you have loads of paint) or pour the paint in a shallow tray and roll the bottle in it. Once the bottle is covered, it can be suspended to dry and drip. Cork the bottle (before rolling/dipping) and hang it with a string or wire. Oil-based paint would be best but you may need to thin it and do couple of application. I get my paint at the local hazardous material collection center for free.

Have fun

Hey Melsky, I found another one...just like the kind you mentioned...white that drips colors! They're at waxwizard.net. (6 pair for 28 bucks.)

Yeah! Drip candles! I used to love those things. As a kid I thought they were kind of magical. You can still buy them. I found them at Candle 4 less for 5 for $5.50. The Woodstock Candle Company sells a very psychedelic alternative.

I'd rather just have the bottle of chianti without the paint.  My house is colorful and eclectic anyway.  But it needs one of those white candles that drips in color - does anyone remember those?  My parents had one in the 70s.  I haven't thought about those in a long time, does anyone know where to get them online?  I think I am going to get some chianti and one of those candles for my kitchen table.

Heh. Isn't it always the way that paint won't stick to the stuff you want it to stick to, but will stick to the stuff you don't want it to stick to?

Standard house paint is both durable and sticks to glass well.  Trust me on this, I'm still cleaning paint off some of the windows on my house from the previous owner's slapdash painting style.
