Attention all wood workers...

By DIY Maven

check out these fabulous shelves by Iola Design. Their simple lines make them totally DIY-able in the stock of your choosing. When available in November 2007, the shelves will range from $625 to $650. Yeah, definitely worth a DIY attempt.

The Ayumi, $650

The Chiaki, $625

The Michiyo, $265

That is, I mean to say, you'd think the products would be cheaper to accommodate a larger market. But then, I guess this being a 'designer' item and all...

They're ...kind of cute. I guess I prefer minimalist shelves to bring attention to the items it's holding, rather than have attention to the shelf itself. Unless, of course, one uses it as an art piece as in the last picture here. It's so funny, cos you'd think that sustainable product-lovers would be tree-hugger hippie types who are broke, but prices on almost all the sustainable items I've ever seen would state otherwise.

I couldn't resist going to the site. Here's something else I think I like enough to try.

Apparently, these folks know something we don't....hmmm....

Note to self: Project alert!!!! Wonder who will DIY it first (and post a pic).

I am stunned, almost sickened by cost of those shelves.  Prices like that do no favors whatsoever to encourage the purchase and use of sustainably built products.

They look like 1 x 6's but really they're made of maple and pricey laminated bamboo, which still doesn't negate the fact that they look like 1 x 6's. And did you notice they come unassembled? Although, I'm sure, for that price, they include a really good allen wrench. (Note sarcasm.) And Bruno...I've already sketched out my version ;)

holy cow....how can they possibly justify $650 for a couple pieces of 1x6?
