Style Make Over: Country Conversion

By DIY Maven

The great thing about country-style furniture is it’s falling out of favor, which means you can pick it up for just about nothing. Another thing, it’s almost always made out of real wood–generally pine–which is more than I can say about most of the furniture at IKEA. The not-so-great thing about country-style furniture, is, well, it’s country–not that there’s anything wrong with that if that’s the way you roll, but if you don’t, you’re going to have to get creative.

If you’re faced with a piece of furniture that needs a style make over, your best friend is, as always, paint. But with something like country furniture that can often have a lot of curvy lines, you might need to consider reconstructive surgery.

For this pine corner cabinet, MWT first used a skill saw to cut off the wavy bit on top for a much cleaner appearance. Next, he removed the wavy bit on the bottom completely and replaced it with a simple piece of pine.

Next, he handed the cabinet off to me. A coat of primer, three coats of black satin latex, some new hardware and we’ve gone from country to contemporary-country, which may not sound like a big change, but it sure looks like one.
