Eco-Tote Bags
By DIY MavenFellow Curblier bsgilf posted a question yesterday that was of concern to me a couple of months ago. It all started with IKEA charging for their shopping bags and San Francisco passing an ordinance requiring retailers to use eco-friendly bags. Always answering ‘paper’ when the paper/plastic question arose, I was looking for sturdy shopping bags of the same size as a quality paper grocery bag. In my search, I found ECOBAGS, which has a perpetual bag for every occasion. Included in their selection are hemp, organic, recycled, and canvas bags as well as something called the ‘E-Shopping Systems’. If price is an issue, check out the very economical non-woven polypropylene GreenBag® collection; they start at 3 bucks a pop.

hyoomen...you are absolutely right! I think if people would try re-usable (I have something similar to the GreenBags, which I found at my grocery store) they wouldn't ever go back to single use, if ONLY for the fact that the re-usable bags are incredibly sturdy. You can put twice as much into them as any paper or plastic bag because you know they can handle the weight. I'll never go back to single use.

The GreenBags are spectacular and widely available from a number of retailers at this point (including Whole Foods Market). They are probably the most common of the promotional bags out there at this point.
You might also consider checking out your local Salvation Army or Goodwill for bags of the sort Stephee was referring to.
As for the question of paper or plastic, I do not think a case can be made for one as better than the other. No single-use bag can ever be championed, right? ;) Yay for reusable bags.
