Curbly’s Top Design Fan(?) Club, Week 6: Party Time

By DIY Maven

Okay, last night’s installment of my new favorite show to hate wasn’t half bad. The profuse use the effenheimer may have had something to do with it. Such a versatile word, don’t cha think?

The Task

The six remaining designers were broken up into two teams and were asked to design/plan a party for Bicardi Limon, which would take place in two 30' by 40' tents to be erected on the plaza of the PDC. They were to incorporate the five senses into their designs as well and were given a bankroll of $8500 per team to get the job done.

The Drama

The fact that tonight’s editing goosed up the reality t.v. angle didn’t hurt the drama department. Carisa felt the need to babysit Michael, which may have been necessary. (Go-go dancers and bouncers as accessories?) Goil, on the other hand, was reduced to tears after playing Andrea’s and Erik’s bitch, or rather, Jan Brady to their Marcia, Marcia, Marcia and Cindy.

The Winners and Losers

Matt (my new fav?), Michael and Carisa’s room took the win and rightly so. It was a clean, sophisticated design that didn’t detract the eye. Erik, Andrea and Goil’s room was deemed the loser and rightly so. Although there were interesting individual elements in the room, put together, they were a mess. As Erik pronounced himself the primary visionary of the design, he was shown the door. Ba-bye Erik. Maybe that’ll make you think twice the next time you ‘eff with my too-nice-for-his-own-good Goil.

The Summation

Team Matt’s decision to go with a variety of seating heights was on the mark, as was their raised D.J. booth. And their Lucite-topped, lemon filled tables were delightful. The judges loved their use of Doc Holiday as an accessory/bouncer. The only distressing component of the tent was the slab of margarine hanging from the ceiling. Team Erik, on the other hand, made some very interesting floor chandeliers, although the concept may have had more impact if there hadn’t been so many of them. Can you say ‘focal point’? Their addition of a barricade at the entrance of their tent wasn’t exactly inviting. And the lowest of the low-lights had to be Andrea’s fugly, I mean furry, flower arrangements. Ugh.
