New Life for Old LP

For a great recycling project, how about turning an old LP into a bowl? If you’ve already hauled your vinyl to the curb, don’t worry. Thrift stores and charity sales almost always have some records they need to get rid of.

What You Need

An old LP or two

An oven-proof bowl (I used stainless steel mixing bowls for this project)

Oven mitts

Oven

The Proceedure

1. Preheat your oven to 200 degrees.

2. Center your LP over the inverted bowl, as shown.

3. Carefully slide the bowl and LP into the oven.

4. Bake your record for 3 to 5 minutes.

5. Donning oven mitts, remove the ruined record from the oven and press or flute the pliable edges into a bowl shape.

6. Let your jazzy new bowl cool for about five minutes, and then finesse if from the bottom of the oven-proof bowl.

The Do-Over

Did your bowl turn out a little lopsided? My first attempt did, but don’t worry. Just put the LP back over the oven-proof bowl and slide it back into the oven for a few minutes. When you take it out, it will be pliable enough to lift off the bowl. Then, just reposition it and chuck it back in the oven for a few more minutes. Pick up the procedure at step 5.

For different effects, try using different sized oven-proof bowls. Large ones will create a shallower LP bowl. A smaller one will produce a more fluted edge.

Great for movie night, line your new, cool LP bowl with a paper towel, and fill it with your snack of choice. And to complete the recycling circle, how about turning the album cover into cheap art?

I cried just a bit when I saw this. I love my old vinyl. As long as you are using a copy of Herb Albert and the Tiwanna Brass this could be a fun project :)
