Four steps to better social snapshots
By CuratorSocial snapshots: fast informal photography within an social setting.
Due to the fast, spontaneous nature of social snapshots, we have reduced the topic of 'photographic composition' down to 4 simple steps to help enhance the quality of your social snapshots.

When out having fun with friends the usual snapshot routine starts with the mental spark of 'oooh lets take a photo' and out come the cameras.
When this happens quickly look around and give some thought to your location and who you are with - this is your context and this is where you should start to think of what type of story you want to tell.

If you are indoors look for a strong single light source. If it is daytime a window is a good option, if it is night look for a strong lamp or backlit sign.
This style of lighting is called 'Rembrandt' lighting and is flattering and simple to use. Rembrandt lighting spreads shadows onto your subject and gives a dramatic, beautiful effect that is easy to master and 'easy' is the key when social snapping.
If you are outside in daylight look for shade - try and get out of direct sunlight.

When in a social situation you don't want to be taking and retaking photographs. This will sap the spark and take away any chance of capuring 'the moment'- so make it count. The best way to make the most of this is to do a little preparation before you pull out your camera or phone cam.
If the social situation is a special occasion organised for a person in the group - make that person the centre of the image. Pose, throw your hands up, jump, act - once everyone is into playing a part take the image and have fun doing it!

Attempt to get a few close-up shots straight after the posed social group shot.
If you had fun during the posing session then this should carry through into the close-up images - this afterglow will make the smiles more natural and the social connection more engaging.
Take care not to get too close as you won't want to highlight any of your friends wrinkles or blemishes
