How to turn a Tea Towel into a Kitchen Rug

By DIY Maven Kitchenrug1

Ric rac lover Hannah was in a predicament. The space in front of her kitchen sink is an odd size, so finding a rug to fit the space had been difficult. She spotted a rug she liked on Plow & Hearth whose pattern was inspired by that of vintage tea towels. The rug was too big, but it did inspire this clever how-to. To replicate Hannah’s technique, you’ll need a tea towel, an old woven rug for backing, however Hannah also suggests using an old towel, blanket or a layer or two of canvas, and a sewing machine. To see the... »MORE

How to Make Scrap Paper Mosaics

By DIY Maven Scrapshot11_lg

Jeffrey Rudell over at Craft Stylish shares his process of making scrap paper mosaics. Materials are minimal on this one and include scrap paper–junk mail works perfectly–and some time. Simply tear your paper and assemble the pieces in the image you imagine. I’d suggest maybe using archival glue to adhere your final vision to, perhaps, an artist’s board or even just posterboard. When fashioning your image, Jeffrey says there’s two things to keep in mind:“Overall shapes go a long way toward making things recognizable. Don't worry too much about articulating each and every part of the face you're trying to... »MORE

Today, Christie’s auction house is setting aside its usual antique faire. On the block for your consideration is a collection of items from the creme de la creme of late 20th and early 21st century furniture designers. As you can imagine, these pieces are expensive. Like mortgage-the-house expensive. But, thanks to Christie’s on-line catalog, gawking is free. Here is just a peek at what you’ll find there: 'Komed' A pair of leather upholsered tubular steel chairs, designed circa 1996, by Marc Newson. DIY ModUpholstery: Mock Tufting

By ModHomeEcTeacher Mocktuftingfinished_8_a

The problem at hand was those annoying, yet luxurious, down-filled back cushions.  Everytime anyone would get up from the loveseat, the back cushions were smashed down, seams all askew.  My compulsive self had to walk over, re-fluff, straighten and then I could move on. Don't the best solutions just come to you in the simplest of ideas?? My first thought was to make some covered buttons and pull those through the cushions to give a modern, symmetric button tufting look.  That is definitely an option.  After perusing the Mitchell Gold catalogue, I opted for mock tufting made by using upholstery twine to make mock tufts with symmetrical... »MORE

Magnetic Soap Holder

By DIY Maven Image002

This just might make me give up the pump. From Hammacher Schlemmer, the Magnetic Soap Holder suspends a bar of soap over the sink basin, thus eliminating scum and extending the bar’s life. The arm has a powerful magnet at its tip and is made of ‘type 201 polished stainless steel’ and has a solid steel base that acts as a counterweight. To use it, you simply press a thin metal disk–which has rounded edges that won’t interfere with normal use–into the soap itself and then let the magnet do all the work. Although it'll set you back 50 bucks,... »MORE

Restless nights-searching for a better way to sleep

By David Rowtree Nif_bor_rou_sha

Lying in bed last night I began to think about…everything. Ironically the only time I seem to be able to arrange thoughts in my head is when I should be dispersing them, throwing them into high wind over a barren sandy desert of sleep. It is such an unfortunate conundrum for someone who loves sleep, could sleep all through the day without a care in the world but as soon as head hits pillow it’s…think, think, think.   I am overcome with an urge to call long lost friends I haven’t spoken to in years, put the washing or... »MORE

The Solar-Powered Plant.

By Chrisjob Solartree1

From Inhabitat: "At first glance this energy producing “plant” may look pretty commonplace, but looks can be deceiving. AIST, Mitsubishi and Tokki has enveloped each solar leaf in an ultra thin film to repel oxygen and water which will make it more durable and friendlier to the harsh outdoor environment. If this prototype performs up to par, they are looking at applying this technology from walls and windows to clothes and toys." And, if you're looking for a little more mature plant, here's a solar tree with photovoltaic leaves. »MORE
