Ten Ways to Decorate with Thrifted Goods.

By Chrisjob

The thrift store. It's eco-friendly. It's cheap. And most importantly. the limitations force you to work creatively.

So, take CasaSugar's approach and go for it: use those second-hand gems as central items in your decor. You may be surprised.

I think your post is great. There are first time viewers who never thought of using an old sewing machine table for an entryway table. CasaSugar has gleaned lots of ideas from various sources and combined them to get everyone thinking. Thanks for giving us reminders of how we can re-use.

Great post Chris. I have to be the single most frequent shopper at my local thrift-stores, and at least 80% of my home furnishings are from there. I consider myself pretty creative and always find ways to transform the junk at the stores into treasure for my house. I certainly am not a veteran to Curbly (yet), but in the few weeks I have been a member, I have found lots of tips for thrifting I never thought of before. For instance, until I read ModHomeEcTeachers' tip about collecting old leather jackets for various upholstry projects etc, I bypassed dozens of them in the store. Was an awesome tip. And when the local stores get dull, seems like the same ho-hum crap I see everytime I go, I visit Curbly, which hasn't failed yet to renew my passion for thrifting and to refresh my creativity for the next trip I make to those thrift stores! You're right, it's not the most original article, but the pictures and colors got me itching to get back and see what I might have overlooked last time! Keep 'em coming! Love It :)

Kristen, I've written for Curbly for nearly two years, and one of the things I continue to love most is that it's not merely a collection of design professionals, but a true community of people that simply want to make their spaces, the art, and their lives more lovely. There's alot of diversity here: there are established decorators and bloggers, there are young families creating their first home together, there are college students simply trying to make their dorms a little more cozy, and countless others. Likewise, there are folks with myriad skillsets and talents: some are amazing seamsters, some woodworkers, some with great eyes for color, and some who simply can just pick out amazing things among all the junk at thrift stores. I certainly think that's a skill, and I'm always amazed at what people like ModHomeEcTeacher can find and transform.

Certainly, some who often check Curbly and related sites might know a few of the tips in the article to which I linked, but there are new people who stumble across this site everyday, and they may not have as much experience or knowledge as others. And if they happen to read CasaSugar's suggestions, and it inspires them to recycle and reinvent goods, then I'm happy to have encouraged them. I drew attention to that article cause I found some really excellent tips for beginners: the solid wood furniture is a good one, as well as seeing a frame for more than the art it contains, and using old glasses for parties is much preferable to disposable ones. No, the article isn't mind blowing in its originality, but I don't find it pedantic for folks who don't regularly know how to navigate thrift shops.

I see in your profile that you consider your style "thrift store grand." I look forward to seeing some of your projects and recycled efforts that will help inspire us all. Cheers.

Wha??? I mean this way less snarky than it'll sound...do you seriously think anyone who regularly enjoys this site, um, might be surprised at the result of adding second-hand purchases to their decor. Well, duh, that's why we do it. To whom are you speaking? We are the thrift store regulars, the garage sale ghosts, the dumpster divers!

What I really love about Curbly is its inspiration in design and recyclying, how it tries to elevate our lives by marrying those concepts. But this is really pedantic for you guys. Its beneath you. And us. Back to the good stuff.
