Rory on Apartment Therapy Boston takes such an approach with pipes and fittings from the plumbing department. Going way beyond simply using straight lengths and end flanges for legs, this desk incorporates a fine design inspired by the limitations of the medium.
To create your own version, simply check out the pipe fitting section of your local hardware store or home center, and discover what's available. Then, create a design (at home on paper, or right there in the plumbing aisle) and identify the other materials you'll need to make it perfect. Purchase, assemble, and rejoice in your good work.

There was another post very recently on AT that showed a NY company that was making tables, etc. from pipe fittings and I can't find it now. I saved a couple of the pictures as I am going to try and make two nightstands with glass tops (sometime in the New Year). It looked like the NY company had their creations chromed, but I think a good can of spray paint or maybe having them painted at an auto body shop would look great. We recently had a brass bar for our dining room table chromed and found it to be expensive. We have used some pipe fittings with a screw off end as a place to hide a house key!
