What To Plant Now: Seeding for Late Season Success.
By Chrisjob
Hmmm...Who knew? It's not too late to plant new vegetables to enjoy this season, even from seeds! Beans, carrots, summer squash, cucumbers, herbs like parsley, basil, and cilantro are still fine for summer, and its actually time to start planting cold weather crops broccoli, kale, kohlrabi, and turnips. And you can wait until mid-August for greens such as lettuce, spinach, and argula. "Starting seeds in July can be tricky, though, because it’s so easy for
the soil to get too hot and dry. So for the most part, I plant crops
that don’t mind being transplanted — chard, spinach, basil and parsley
— in trays or pots, and set them on the porch, where I can keep an eye
on them and sprinkle them if they look dry. I thin them right there,
and transplant them when they are just a few inches high.It is
possible to start seeds for root crops like beets, turnips and carrots,
which do not like to be moved. Plant them straight in the garden beds
and be sure to add plenty of compost, which introduces nutrients and
microbes to the soil and improves the soil’s ability to retain water."
