10 Ways to Green Your Fridge.

By Chrisjob

Vegetarian Times offers 10 great tips to best steward your homes' most beloved appliance. "According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, the average American fridge uses around 1,383 kilowatt hours a year, which is 14 percent of your household’s electrical needs and about $90 a year. But there are simple steps you can take to lighten your refrigerator’s impact on your wallet—and the environment. More importantly, many of these changes—some large and some small—can cut down on the chemicals and bacteria lingering in your fridge, which is healthier for everyone in the house."

1.  DITCH THE PLASTIC

2. UPGRADE (AND DOWNSIZE)

3. FORGET ICE AND WATER DISPENSERS

4. FILL ’ER UP

5. MIND THE (EXPIRATION) DATE

6. KEEP IT CLEAN … NATURALLY

7. VACUUM THE COILS

8. CHECK THE SEALS

9. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

10. TAKE YOUR TEMPERATURE

Haha. That's a great tip, especially for those with big storage freezers in the basement or garage. I wonder if you could also keep frozen food that's past its date or freezer burnt, or if that'd be dangerous.

I said 'your' freezer as in the general sense, not 'my'...oh, never mind.

Your freezer gets to be on the empty side?! Man, I need to get out of this place....

Also, if your freezer compartment is on the empty side, fill used milk cartons or plastic bottles full of water and put them inside the freezer. The ice keeps the freezer colder which makes it work less.

(Must be 'green' day.)
