By Chrisjob

DIYLife points out this cool video from MetaCafe: A homemade stud finder. Simply glue a magnet to some fishing line, and pass it along the wall.

I don't know where you can buy one unless you live near a "Princess Auto" they might have it. It's a small yellow plastic dohicky and says Zircon; check clearance bins.

To be fair it doesn't work very well on walls with textured paint but it's ok for confirming where mesurements say the stud should be at. I can't say for sure it doesn't just have a magnet in it, might be why it's not very good.

I think the theory is that it also would pick up any screws or nails in the studs. I'd love a functional $2 stud finder. What model, and where can one purchase one?

Most homes have wooden studs; this would really be only useful for somewhere you KNOW has steel studs.

A magnet will also not find common copper pipe, aluminium wires and studs, plasic pipes or nonferrous ducting

You can buy a stud finder for $2 + 2 AA batteries it's a good investment...

If you need to know where your studs are find the electrical outlets and the stud will be on one side or the other of that outlet you can then mesure out where they are based on your building codes and tapping the wall to check.
