I grew up in southeast Minneapolis, moved to St. Paul for 29 years, now I'm back in northeast Minneapolis (the trendy arts district.) Both cities have good stuff. I think MInneapolis is cool because of the lakes, restaurants, etc.  St. Paul is more homey, like raising your kids, neighborhoods, etc. Good ad agency that's hiring lots of new staff, fun environment, cool people -- MoCo in northeast Minneapolis. Housing in the Twin Cities right now is pretty reasonable (correct me if I'm wrong, Minneapolitans!), thanks to a slow market. Of course, it depends where you want to live. Northeast has been popular lately thanks to its proximity to downtown, artsy vibe, and good concentration of bars and restaurants.

I'm also a fan of Prospect Park; great location (5 minutes from either downtown), close to the university, and lots of good places to eat/hang out. Here's a map of Minneapolis neighborhoods.

Here's the real secret: Saint Paul rocks! Ok, I'm biased (lived here all my life, etc.), but in truth, there's a lot of good stuff going on here. Great local music at the Turf Club  from Saint Paul bands like Martin Devaney, Heiruspecs and Har Mar Superstar (ok, Roseville technically). Favorite 'hoods: Saint Anthony Park (mine), and Selby-Dale.

Last piece of advice: stalk Craigslist
