A camping or hiking trip can go all wrong if your dog gets hit by skunk spray. Be prepared. Put together your own de-skunking shampoo kit just for good measure. Here’s what you need to put in your kit:
- hydrogen peroxide
- baking soda
- dish soap
Optional:
- rubber gloves
- bucket
- spray bottle
- vinegar
- pet shampoo
Pack these up in a little bag and throw in the car with your other gear. You’ll need to find running water if you have to use the de-skunkifying kit.
- Mix 1 qt. of hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda and just a teaspoon of dishwashing soap.
- Wash all areas of the dog, except the eyes. Work the mixture into the fur and skin, let it sit for 10-15 minutes to neutralize the smell.
- Rinse thoroughly
- If you still smell the skunk smell, mix up another batch and repeat
- If the smell persists, pour vinegar into a spray bottle and saturate the dog’s fur, massage into the skin and let sit for 20 minutes. Rinse and shampoo with pet shampoo.
- Towel dry your dog
The washing technique above is a combination of many techniques described on eHow.
