10 Ways to Beat the Summer Heat

by on May 20, 2010

People in certain climates could easily delineate their homeownership BAC or AAC. Before Air Conditioning and After Air Conditioning. Our first house didn’t have it when we bought the place. We eventually installed a central AC unit, but until that day came we had to be creative with our cool downs. If a AC is not in your future but hot weather is, OR if you want to cut down on your electricity costs, you might want to take advantage of these ten ways to beat the heat.

  1. If you do have AC, set the dial higher. According to TOH, we can save 5 to 8 percent on cooling costs for each degree higher than 78 F.
  2. Use a fan, ceiling or otherwise. BAC we used one of those window insert type fans that helped us survive some especially oppressively hot nights.
  3. Practice ‘Texas Cool’.
  4. Use sun-blockers.
  5. Install a programable thermostat.
  6. Cook smarter.
  7. Install cooler lights.
  8. Fix leaky ducts.
  9. Seal air leaks.
  10. Add insulation to your attic.
