What first - strip the floorboards or paint the walls?

By 3stripe

My hallway and living room both need to have the floors stripped back, but also their bumpy wallpaper removed from the walls, and artex from the ceiling as well for that matter.

I'm wondering - have the walls/ceilings done first? And then do the floors....

Or, get the floors done first? And then the skirting boards... and then the walls/ceiling sorted.

Maybe the order doesn't make any differenc?

When doing this kind of renovation, the rule is always to go from top to bottom. Ceilings, walls, then floors. Decorative trim goes on last.

Ooh I totally agree. Get any crap removed and redone from walls/ceiling BEFORE doing floor/baseboards or odds are way too good that your floors will get mucked up in the process.

I'll 2nd DIY Maven's comment.  No matter how careful you are with drop cloths and masking tape, accidents always happen when painting (at least they always seem to happen to me).  And if you've just redone your floors, you don't want to have to be cleaning up paint off of them.

P.S. Another reason the baseboards come last: they always get mucked up in the floor-sanding process!

The rule in our house is baseboards last. We would do them in this order: wallpaper removal, artex removal, paint ceiling, paint walls, refinish floors and then paint/refinish baseboards. We have done all of these and the floor refinishing process can leave behind a mess, but if you paint after re-doing floors, you run the risk of damaging your new floors--with paint, sliding around ladders, etc. We always make sure we have enough wall paint left over for touch up. And baseboards are last because we always remove the quarter-round before we refinish floors.
