Bendy shelving with cable management?

By 3stripe

I'm looking for some kind of shelving system to go on my hallway wall, beside the main door, that will liven up the space a bit. Eventually I'm hoping to strip the carpet back to the floorboards but not just yet...

My hallway

The shelving should go from about shoulder height down to the ground I think... and the depth of it must be kept to a minimum as the hallway is not that wide.

It also needs some kind of cable management because I want my cordless phone and wireless router to sit on it.

So I was thinking an 'S' kind of shape would be neat, using kind of colourful flexible plastic so that it could have a good few curves in , and fold back on itself to make a kind of cable-holder at the back?

Any suggestions for a good material to use? Or something I could buy in the UK that's out there already?

PS. I've just moved into my first place so there's going to be plenty more questions on the way :)

I should have said, the computer is only there so there's something to put the phone & router on for the moment!

However, this is where the phone point is so they need to stay at this spot.

I like the idea of some multi-coloured cable ties though (I also love the lights you get that are made of these guys)

It looks like you have a cordless phone base, a wireless router, and a computer sitting in the hallway right next to the door. Is this where the phone and high-speed Internet jack are located? Is there another jack in the house you could use? The beauty of wireless is that the base units can go anywhere. With the hallway being narrow, you might consider having a shelving unit that offers deep shelves at the bottom, but narrow shelves at the top so as not to create such a closed-in feeling as you are walking past it. For cord management, you might try "Tie Wraps" (available from various sources) or Velcro to simply fasten the cords together. The shelving unit should help keep them out of site. If you need to have the computer in this location, remember to allow for plenty of ventilation. You might also use a piece of very porous filtering cloth near the air intake to ensure dust doesn't get clogged inside of it. ~ Gregory
