Nó Design - "Runned Over"

By 2Modern Nodesign_3

Continuing my posts about this design office, today I'll show you this re-used tire line. The project of this assembly line started from the cutting of the tire in five equal parts, to make sure no material is lost. Since this raw material is easy to acquire, the idea of re-using tires trough design may result in a social product that associates environment education, creativity inducement and income generation for communities that can make the production of these pieces. »MORE

Caixa Forum in Madrid, Spain by Herzog & De Meuron Architekten

By 2Modern Img_6743

They did it again. Their remodeling of the old Central Electric station of Madrid, a building designed in 1899 by Jesus Carrasco-Munoz Encina and Jose Battle, is the talk of the town. When I visited Madrid in December 2007, they were putting the finishing touches - now the building is open and has become a new landmark for the capital of Spain.. Looking as if miraculously hovering above ground, the old electrical station was transformed into a new cultural center for the city of Madrid, opposite the Prado: The Caixa Forum Madrid will be hosting art shows, exhibitions and artist... »MORE

Make Some Green Competition

By 2Modern Make_some_green

Keeseh Studio invites students and design enthusiasts to celebrate the pursuit of ecodesign through an international competition to utilize waste material. A given manufacturing facility creates many copies of a product; therefore they create many copies of their waste material as well. Waste material can be used as raw material for other products or processes; this concept is known as upcycling. The goal of the competition is to promote upcycling by encouraging the use of wasted materials to generate innovative designs and redefine the standards of environmental sustainability by fostering balance between conservation and development. This competition will provide a... »MORE

Chanel Surfing: an Olympic Sport?

By 2Modern Cubeoglass

For the world's most accomplished athletes, the Olympics means a chance to represent their country and compete against their peers in the challenge of their lives.  For the rest of us, the Olympics probably means a couple of hours in front of the TV.  So, for those of us playing along at home, may I suggest an aesthetic experience rather than an athletic one? Two examples of beautiful, modern television sets: Above is a new update to the classic Cuboglass designed by Mario Bellini for Brionvega.  (One of the original Cuboglass sets is part of the MOMA's permanent collection).   When... »MORE

Flawless

By 2Modern Turnerhomebasepaint

Turner Duckworth have come up with a perfect design solution for a paint can. The can clearly and effectively displays the color and finish of the paint inside with a no-nonsense/frills approach to the layout. Almost makes me want to paint... but not really. --sdotg-- »MORE

Rapid Manufacturing: Throwing out the Mold

By 2Modern Mylight_2

New technology in the form of Rapid Manufacturing is changing the way designs are delivered from conception to completed product. Using the revolutionary form of printing known as Rapid Prototyping that builds up a 3D object layer by layer of polycarbons, nylon or other materials, Rapid Manufacturing or RM can produce actual prototypes in as little as a few hours. This gives advantages to designers in terms of flexibility throughout the process, a shorter production time-frame with implications for cost reduction, too, and expands the possibilities for mass customization of furniture, lighting, textiles or even architecture. Taking the process a... »MORE

More Buenos Aires

By 2Modern Exterior

If you're still in Buenos Aires since my last post, you probably had already gone to Palermo. Among other lovely design shops at Palermo, you can find "Sopa de Principe", an Argentine dolls and accessories factory were everything is made of soft fabric and a lot of creativity. Monsters, princesses and pets wait sitting inside big fruit boxes. Created by Verónica Longoni, the pieces try to bring back the spirit of home made toys, very simple and technology free. »MORE

Eco-Friendly Paint Hues

By 2Modern Low_voc_paints_1_3

Like everyone else these days, I am on an eco-conscious, reduce my carbon footprint, path.  When I saw these paints listed in Readymade Magazine's Digital Sampler Edition, I just had to share.  All of the paint hues are low voc paints (that's low volatile organic compounds) for keeping your internal spaces environmentally friendly   You can get clearer images with costs per gallon and websites from ReadyMade's online edition article (just go to the contents page, click on Re View, and go through each page until you get to the one on paints...you'll enjoy the ride). I first read about... »MORE

NORMANN Copenhagen

By 2Modern Logo_l

Souk al Bahar (the new souk open at The Palace Hotel in Downtown Burj, Dubai, where we live) has opened some great little places since it's grand opening a few months ago - shopping, cafes, restaurants, furniture...and as in most of the souks in the city, some great one-of-a-kind boutiques. We are lucky enough to have 50 degrees (check out Kitsch22 for more on their brands, links, etc.) - a kitschy, groovy hipster boutique selling things for your home, music, journals and all things cool - lighting (think Tord Boontje), music (think Ennio Morricone remixes) and all things NORMANN Copenhagen.... »MORE

Leave Your Foot Print

By 2Modern Bootcrock

Be one of two winners to leave your personal signature, quite literally, in urban fashion.  Dr. Martens is having their annual competition to create a design for the next line of Dr. Martens.  We all wore them at one point in our adolescent life, hung out with someone who did or still wear them because you've broken them in so badly you can't imagine replacing them.  Well, there's something to be said for a company that lingers for decades solely on  their laced-up boots!  The competition allows you to create a design of your own, using pens, paint, various fonts,... »MORE

The importance about good shape

By 2Modern Spoonproto

I had a great surprise when I found the work of Paul Sandip, who made all the products that you can see on these images.  He call his self like an "Industrial Sculptor", but we know the people like him as industrial designers.  Does not matter.  The medular fact is the good design that he produces. Intelligent shapes that minimize materials, solve problems (are functional) and express the beauty of the simplicity.  That's how I call good design.  Great job! I really don't know if you can buy his stuff, but you can watch more in Paul Sandip's portafolio. Via... »MORE

Modernity in Hamburg: ADA 1 by Juergen Mayer H.

By 2Modern 000

Hamburg, is the biggest port of Germany and one of the biggest in Europe. Lately it has seen a steady number of interestingly designed buildings take place proudly among older establishments. Many though tend to fall into cliché territory. Not so the ADA 1 office building by Jürgen Mayer H. Situated near the banks of the Alster river, ADA 1 looks like a combination of a typical office building and liquid, organic curves. It references the flowing river as well as establishing a relationship with it through the views one can enjoy from the building. The architect named the round,... »MORE

Impulse Seattle

By 2Modern Willow_754

Willow dress, $754 I have fallen in love with a clothing boutique in Seattle, Washington called Impulse. The clothes they carry are beautiful, mostly practical and a few fanciful. However, I think all of the lines they carry share a similar aesthetic of  being luxuriant, comfortable, modern, and extremely wearable. Nomia dress, $346 Plesner dress, $278 They carry international lines such as Isabel Marant, APC, Willow, United Bamboo, Plesner, Nomia, Rachel Comey and others that are extremely easy to wear while still being stylish and sometimes extremely innovative, such as their sweaters by  Junya Watanabe and Future Classic. Hayon and Wanders at Milan Design Week 2008

By 2Modern Poliform_house_of_dreams_marcel_wan

With all the Earth Day events and green hype, have we forgotten about the world's largest furniture fair that just occurred last week in Milan? It was amazing. I have to thank Kay from Wallpaper Magazine for providing hundreds of photos of the show for me and all of the readers. Unfortunately, space is at a premium, so I've distilled the photos down to five. Three from Marcel Wander's Poliform show called My House of Dreams and two from Jaime Hayon's Bisazza Home Showroom. Both Designers, I think, are projecting a much more baroque and fantastical future for contemporary design... »MORE

10 Tips for Choosing Color

By 2Modern Rainbow_paintbrushes

• Lighting is different in the paint store then it is in your home. When you find a color you like test it in your own space before you buy a large quantity. • Color is as much about accessories, furniture and upholstery as it is about paint. Consider your entire pallet when picking a wall color and their relationships with one another. • Bold, spicy colors really make a statement and demand attention. Keep your accessories simple so they don’t compete. • Color doesn’t have to leap out at you to have a visual effect. Combining neutral colors with... »MORE
