Halloween Hooch

A witch brewing a concoction using her broom to stir.

As they say, candy is dandy, but liquor is quicker, so in the spirit of he season, I’ve scrounged around looking for cocktail recipes that put the howl in Halloween. Here’s some of the spookiest!

Vampire

  • 1 part bourbon whiskey
  • 1 part Drambuie
  • 1 part Dubonnet

Mix with ice and strain into cocktail glass. Garnish with a red cherry and a twist of lemon.

Black Magic

  • 1-1/2 oz. Vodka
  • 3/4 oz. Coffee Liqueur
  • dash of lemon

Mix the Vodka and Liqueur with cracked ice in shaker; follow up with the dash of lemon juice.

Dark Angel

  • 1 shot of black Vodka
  • 1 shot of J’germeister
  • Red Bull

Pour Red Bull over ice in a highball glass; next add the Vodka and J’germeister. The Red Bull will rise to the top for a layered effect.

Zombie

  • ½ oz Bacardi 141 rum
  • 1 oz pineapple juice
  • 1 oz orange juice
  • ½ oz apricot brandy
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 2 oz light rum
  • 1 oz dark rum
  • 1 oz lime juice

Blend all parts with ice except Bacardi 151. Pour into a collins glass. Finish by pouring Bacardi 151 proof rum on top. For garnish, try a fruit slice, sprig of mint and/or a cherry.

And for a non-alcoholic option…

Warm Witch’s Blood

  • 4 cups cran-apple juice
  • 2 cups orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • a small handful of berries
  • dash of allspice
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons of sugar

Bring all ingredients to a boil in a saucepan; reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Serve in glasses or cups garnished with an orange slice, if desired.
