A Holiday Mantel Makeover: No Mantel? No Problem.

Christmas Mantel Makeover: No Mantle, No Worries.

A couple years ago, we designed a fireplace mantel facade for our fireplace. Although we still love it's Scandinavian and modern vibes, this year we decided to focus on our fireplace as-is! Sometimes, you have to just work with what you have and go with it. Here's how you can give any mantel-less fireplace a simple Christmas makeover!

Step

Start with clearing out the surroundings or rearranging your furniture a bit to see what you have to work with.  Remove any other decor and everyday items to free the space from unnecessary clutter.

Decorating a fireplace with no mantel means you have a lot more surrounding space to work with. If you have a lot of stone like we do, you might want to break it up a bit by hanging a single piece that will work as a focal point. We hang a mirror year-round, so this worked well for us. You can also hang a large wreath or painting - whatever you prefer. Then, using greenery, you want to frame in your fireplace to help define the space a bit more. We used fake garland, but you can easily create your own using fresh greens!

Slowly adding in some decor pieces, we want to create a sense of warmth and comfort. Adding a space-saving Christmas tree to compliment your garland will help the space feel even more natural and fresh. We used a simple sheepskin as a tree skirt. We kept the decorations as simple as possible, using neutral colors and textures. Tip: Wood ornaments and tree garland are a great option when trying to soften a stone fireplace!

When the fireplace isn't being used daily, it's nice to have some surrounding candles you can light night after night. Keep it simple with white candlesticks in various heights.

You might have noticed we kept our stump side table kicking around. We decided to use it to add height to balance out the Christmas tree. You can use any kind of small table or item you might have around the home. We leaned a simple wreath against the stone wall, which is a great option if you can't hang anything up.

Add a festive touch to the surroundings by wrapping a couple presents early this year! Who says presents have to be under the tree? The wrapping paper is clean and graphic, which sticks closely to our Scandinavian-inspired style.

Bring in a hint of gold (or any other metallic you love) to break up the textures if it feels a bit flat. We also hung up some galvanized stars at the top of our garland surrounding the fireplace. Yes, it's ok to mix metals!

Bring in a few more touches of nature. We added some sprigs of fresh cedar and pinecones to lay near the candles, presents and wreath.

Lastly, we added a natural basket filled with a few branches that kind of pop from behind the tree. It's a stylish and easy way to hide your firewood when it's not being used and it looks a bit more intentional (not an after thought).

Brighten the space by turning on your Christmas lights and lighting the candles. Sit back and enjoy! Note: Be sure to keep your candles at a safe distance before lighting near any flammable items. The sticks appear to be close to the flame in this picture, but we made sure to give it some safe distance!

The overall vibe feels natural, fresh and cozy. It's the perfect space to wrap yourself in a comfy knit blanket, sip a cup of tea and catch up on some reading this holiday season!
